Modcast Bulletin (Ep.21)

Back on 5/21 of this year, CruelLEGACEY, Greenskull, GrimBrother One and IGN’s Fran Mirabella III visit the set of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn in Vancouver and brought back a plethora of awesome.

After months (months!) of being sworn to silence, they can finally bust out with all they’ve seen and heard … and it comes to us in the form of Modcast Episode 21.

Points and quotes below!

Appreciated points

We are gathered here today – the guys hit on all the basics in the opening act, as they talked about the different sections of the community they represent.

They also mentioned how things change (and continue to) in the way we get our gaming info, from browsing specific sites to now browsing Facebook for the content we want. Who knows what’s next?

How did I get here? Good question – in the perfect world, we’d all have high-paying jobs in the video game industry. Or at least jobs in the industry. Or at least our own ponies. But until that perfect world arrives, the industry is something we have to break into – and Grim asked Fran how he did just that.

FM3’s start began in college when he left that noble pursuit to write for IGN – fast-forward to today where he holds the title of Director of Video Production.

For him, it comes down to passion – you have to love it, put your stuff out there, and hope to be noticed. There’s no magic formula, but if you create good content and get lucky doors will open.

Per GBO it’s more important to love what you do that to plan out the road map – as in, pour your heart out for the love of the game and the contract will hopefully follow.

Fran picked up on that idea and said that while you might not have a lot of followers, if it’s something you care about that’s going to shine through.

Greenskull gave his origin story from the humble beginnings of his XBL experiences to the height of RUL, and it’s been a wild ride with no sign of slowing down. He offered a piece of advice as well – it’s all about contacts baby!

A consistent attitude of positivity (per Grim) will also help your cause, as you reap what you sow. You give the goodness out, you’re going to get it back.

Indebted – A big thank you to 343 for giving them, and through them the community, a behind-the-scenes look at a web series like this. To have information on the process go out this way is fantastic, and it’s good to see.

Hello, my name is… – FM3 wasn’t sure about the name, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. Why not just Halo: Forward Unto Dawn? He understands that it’s marketing, but if it has very little to do with Halo 4 it could be (understandably) confusing as to what it’s actually about.

Green brought up that the series might have more to do with Halo 4 than we know, we just haven’t seen it yet.

Common Thread – Per CL no matter which actor he talked to on the set they all had the same thing that made Halo special to them, and it was the human story, the human struggle that made an impact.

If that vibe shines through in the performance – and based on the trailer I think it will – we’re going to be in for a great ride.

Let them do what they do best – GrimBrother One brought up of good point: he doesn’t want Halo fans (gamers) making the series, he wants actors and directors to make the series.

CruelLEGACEY built on that by bringing up previously hyped stuff that seemed a sure-thing from a positive Comic-Con response (Scott Pilgrim, Snakes on a Plane), but fell flat at the box office. This series will be a proving ground for other games that break into a different medium.

Like it or not, hard-core nerd love does not equal a box-office success. There’s just not enough of us.

The Spartan known as – everyone thought Chief’s armor looked amazing, and now that we’ve seen the trailer I have to agree.

Cruel mentioned that up-close you could tell it was rubber, but on film it will look like the MJOLNIR we know and love.

And the visor! Made by Oakley, it gave the finishing touch to the Master Chief’s look. While I’ve only heard rumors, I think there may be a Legendary Edition of Halo 4 in the spirit of Halo 3 where a full-size helmet of the same make will be available.

It will be $30,000.00. Start saving!

Open eyes, open hearts – things wrapped up with a mention of the broader appeal of this kind of media, and if you’ve been waiting for the right chance to introduce someone to the Halo Universe there’s never been a better time.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn should be the perfect opportunity to smack those close to you in the face with the awesome.

They’ll thank you later.

No one uses Armor Lock in person

Green on the truth of LAN parties – it’s different when they’re right next to you

I’m a firm believer of you need to have those downs to be a well-rounded person, a community member, to be anything. If you only have success you won’t know what’s it’s like, you won’t be able to relate to other members, to other community members, anything like that, right?

Take that Justin Bieber!

GreenSkull passionately believe you need to have highs and lows to be a well-rounded community member. CruelLEGACEY passionately hates Justin Bieber.

Believe it or not, some people actually play Halo … casually…?

GrimBrother One makes a statement, but said in the form of a question. It is hard to say without the question mark at the end

How can someone playing the game be a bad thing?

CL gets rhetorical to make a point – let the new fans in, people!

That story happens to be set in the Halo Universe but that is not what makes it great. The fact that it is a really great piece of literature is what makes it great.

Grim talking about the Bear books or other Halo media. Yes, the Halo setting is fantastic and we all love it – but in some ways it’s window dressing to the substance

There’s a reason Liam Neeson doesn’t say “you sunk my battleship!” in the new Battleship movie, right?

They heard a line of dialogue that had the word “noob” in it, and LEGACEY was a little worried

And when I mean walk into the room …

… he, like, was the room

Grim tries to describe what it’s like when Chief walks in, and GreenSkull helps out

He spells it right, I spell it correct.

That’s CruelLEGACEY if you need him. That’s WITH an “e” before the “y”.

I think rampancy is actually based off of people who are involved in canon

GBO discovers the inspiration behind the term.

If we could leave you, I think, with one thing, it is that the role of a sanitation engineer is very important to the future of the human/covenant war.

And that’s all I’m going to say.

GrimBrother One drops a hint. A hint of what you ask? We’ll have to wait to see. I’m thinking he’s a stand in for the CAMS janitor myself
