I felt bad for Lasky

Last thing for this episode: The Infinity invasion is almost entirely down to the fact that I felt bad for Lasky as we were breaking the outline. The dude is captain of the mightiest ship in the fleet and he mostly gets to stand around on the bridge and talk to Roland. In trying to come up with something fun for him to do, we hit on the idea of the Prometheans invading and that lead to all the ideas that carry us into Spartan Ops season one’s third act… and beyond.

– Brian Reed, franchise writer and author of Spartan Ops Season 1, quoted from the 2.6.13 Halo Bulletin

I thought this was an interesting tidbit from the most recent Halo Bulletin for two reasons:

1.) It’s relatable – I love the fact that writer for Spartan Ops is having the same thought a fan would while reading a novel or playing a game, the thought of, “why isn’t this guy doing something cool?” 🙂

2.) It’s encouraging – the writer’s primary reason for a major plot point was character? That just makes a fiction fan feel good all over.

When a writer starts from the place of “I want to see more of this character, how they react, what they’re feeling and thinking” rather than “I need to make sure we get a sweet gunfight in here somewhere” he or she is on the right track.

In the Halo universe there will always be things to shoot at, but character is a big part of what makes the endless gun play part of a larger story – and that sustains a franchise over the long haul.
